Lee's Ice Cream Dishes Out to Hands on DC Volunteers
Washington, DC, May 2, 2005. Some lucky volunteers at this week's annual Hands on DC (HoDC) work-a-thon to be held May 7, 2005, will be treated to ice cream, courtesy of Lee's Ice Cream. The Owings Mills, Md.-based, premium ice cream-maker will be making on-site visits to hand out its frozen treats to roughly 350 volunteer workers at DC's Aiton Elementary School, Harris (C.W.) Elementary School, Merritt Educational Center, Nalle Elementary School and Smothers Elementary School.
HoDC is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that conducts annual citywide work-a-thons to improve DC public schools. This year the group will send approximately 2,000 volunteers to 33 DC public schools (see list below) this Saturday to repair and upgrade school facilities.
"Hands on DC is extremely grateful for the contributions and support we receive from companies like Lee's Ice Cream," said Katie Ferrier and Billy Pizer, event co-chairs. "Without the assistance we receive from both local and national organizations each year, HoDC's ability to positively impact the conditions at DC public schools would be severely curtailed. It's especially gratifying to see local businesses giving back to their communities."
"Lee's Ice Cream looks forward to working with Hands on DC in thanking all the volunteers who give their time to better our communities," said Shamia N. Lewis, marketing administrator for Lee's Ice Cream/Claudia's Kitchen. " We believe that we should give back to the communities that have supported us in our growth throughout the years." For more than 10 years, HoDC has worked with local community members, volunteers and sponsors to create better schools and brighter futures for the students in the District of Columbia. In its first decade, Hands on DC painted, landscaped, and improved the conditions of the District's more than 150 schools through annual one-day work-a-thons. During this time, the community-based nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers has raised more than $450,000 for college scholarships.
